Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
